Speaker Among Turns Down Debate On Corruption Allegations.
The Leader of Opposition in Parliament Rt.Hon.Joel Ssnyonyi has asked the Speaker of the 11th Parliament to explain to Parliament why in the last three months there has been silence from Parliament, amidst numerous allegations of corruption and abuse of office on social media about Parliament, yet for long, Parliament has bragged about being a people’s centered Parliament that is run on principles of accountability, representation, democracy and good governance for better quality of life for all Ugandans.
“There has been deafening silence from this Institution regarding the issues raised by the people and like we are saying, we are a people centered Parliament. I have seen the Spokesperson of this Parliament on some TV and Radio stations confirming some, saying some are partially correct, while others are exaggerated. But this institution, which is a people centered Parliament hasn’t come out comprehensively, unequivocally, to explain itself to the people, to account to the people of Uganda,” said Ssenyonyi .
In response to the matter, Speaker Among noted that she will never respond to rumors cooked up, against her just because she enacted the Anti-Homosexuality Act.
“I will never give you answers based on hearsay, on rumormongering. And we aren’t going to run this House on rumormongering. Me to answer you on hearsay, on things you have cooked on social media, because I have said no to bum shafting I will not''. She stressed.
There has been alot of public expections on parliament debating on the corruption and abuse of office allegations but has been turned down by the speaker. Some members said.
Hon. Theodore Ssekikubo cited Rule 59(k) of the Rules of Procedure of Parliament, requesting the Presiding Officer to allow the House to deliberate matters raised on social media. But his efforts were futile.
