Suspect Remanded to Prison on Charges of Corruption
The Anti-Corruption Court, presided over by Grade One Magistrate Esther Asiimwe, has remanded Mungereza Edward to prison on charges of corruption.
On the 28th of July, 2022, at Mbarara Police Station, it was alleged that Mungereza Edward, directly offered a sum of UGX 5,000,000 as gratification to Mayombo Daniel, a Public Official employed by the Government as a legal officer at the State House Anti-Corruption Unit. The purpose of this offer was to secure the release of Tumwiine Evarist, who had been detained at Mbarara Police Station on charges of forgery under case number SHACU/GEF/135/2022.
Tumwiine Evarist was apprehended on the same day for his alleged involvement in a conspiracy to process and acquire a land title on government land located in Kyarwabuganda. The parcel of land in question spans approximately 14.62 hectares and includes facilities such as a Health Center III, two cattle dams, LC II Administrative Units, and playgrounds.
In addition, Tumwiine was found in possession of two Ministry of Lands Identity Cards, which indicated that he held the position of Senior Staff Surveyor in both Masaka and Mbarara. Furthermore, he was discovered to have in his possession various land applications, original land files, and land titles.
Following the proceedings, Mungereza Edward has been remanded to prison until the 27th of June, 2023.
