Top City Fraudster Arrested Over Attempts To Steal Shs 4M In A Forex Bureau, Found With Refugees National Cards

Detectives from Katwe Police Station have arrested a suspect on charges of attempted fraud. The suspect has been identified as Mr. Kigozi Joseph, 31 years old and unemployed.

On December 2, 2023, Katwe Police Station received a report on regarding an incident of personation and attempted fraud at Money Bag Forex Bureau in Katwe-Muganzilwaza. Mr. Bulanja David, a 45-year-old resident of Katale Zone-Sseguku Kyengera Town Council in Wakiso District, reported the suspect claiming to be Mr. Kigozi Joseph.

The alleged fraud occurred around 05:00pm when the suspect approached a cashier, requesting to withdraw UGX 3,949,409. He claimed to have sent the money to someone in the USA, but it didn't reach its destination, prompting him to seek a refund. Upon investigation by the cashier using the provided reference, it was revealed that the money did not belong to the imposter, exposing him as a fraudster.

"The suspect, who identified himself as Mr. Kigozi Joseph, 31 years old and unemployed, was apprehended by Katwe Police after attempting to escape during the initial interview. The police recovered a copy of a request withdrawal form, multiple SIM cards, and various identity cards with different names in the possession of the suspect," ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police said.

The police took swift action, arresting the suspect who is currently in custody. A comprehensive investigation is underway, including verifying the authenticity of the recovered identity cards and driving permits from relevant offices such as NIRA. The real owner of the money has been informed, and their statement is pending inclusion in the official record.

"Katwe Police urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities and persons to prevent falling victim to such fraudulent schemes. We appreciate the vigilance exhibited by the cashier," added Owoyesigyire.
