UBOS Celebrates Africa Statistics Day

Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) an independent body responsible for giving the Country National statistics has joined other African Countries to celebrate Africa Statistics Day which is scheduled to take place on Saturday 18th.

The National Chief  Statician who also doubles as the Executive Director of UBOS while addressing the media said at Statistics House in Kampala the institution will spend a week doing different activities to mark Africa Statistics day.

During one week, UBOS will conduct professional seminars, Blood donation, symposium at MUBs among others. "During this week, the Bureau will raise Statistical awareness for purposes of increasing the use of data and strengthening statistical production and profession in the Country," He says.

Dr Mukiza adds that celebrating Africa Statistics day provides the platform to underscore the significant contribution of official statistics in the entire planning and development processes. "it offers stakeholders the opportunity to appreciate the value of quality data but also to challenge the process of data production bearing in mind the continuous technological changing trends in statistical production,"says UBOS boss. 

He added that it is high time we must continuously become innovative to ensure timely data availability, accuracy and quality of Statistics to inform planning,policy formulation and evidences based making.
"These three ingredients of social economic transformation once backed by the reliable statistics can enable the Country to progress towards the right direction. In turn, the citizens will benefit from every government program," Reveals Dr Mukiza.

The National Chief Statician says  statistics is like a mirror through which we can see the future and also reflect on the past. "Statistics plays a monitoring and evaluation role to inform credible discussion and sound debate backed by evidence," Says Dr Mukiza.

He further revealed that UBOS will launch National Population Census day on November 30 at Kololo ground and the President will be the chief Guest. He added that the National Population Census will take place on 9-10 May 2024. "I want to assure the Country that Census will occur. Some wrong people had started saying it will not happen," He says.

Later on UBOS facilitated the one day workshop to teach Journalists on how to report Census. Some experienced journalist like Kagolo from New vision lectured journalists on how to report census. Journalists were also lectured on how to use Artificial Intelligence during and after census.
