UN, human rights organizations urge President Museveni to reject anti-homosexuality Bill.

The United Nations and various human rights organizations have urged President Museveni to reject a bill targeting the LGBTQ+ community, which was approved by the Parliament and is considered "appalling."

After a tumultuous session of nearly seven hours, Ugandan Members of Parliament (MPs) passed a bill on Tuesday with stringent measures against same-sex relationships. It is unclear what new punishments have been decided upon, as homosexuality was already outlawed in Uganda, a traditional and socially conservative country in East Africa.

Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has urged President Museveni not to approve the Bill and turn it into law. He stated that the approval of this discriminatory bill is a very concerning development and that it is likely one of the most severe laws of its kind anywhere in the world.

"If signed into law by the president, it will render lesbian, gay and bisexual people in Uganda criminals simply for existing, for being who they are. It could provide carte blanche for the systematic violation of nearly all of their human rights and serve to incite people against each other."

Amnesty International has called on Mr. Museveni to refuse the "shocking" law and has characterized it as a severe attack on the LGBTQ community.

"This ambiguous, vaguely worded law even criminalises those who 'promote' homosexuality," said Amnesty International's east and southern Africa director, Tigere Chagutah.
