The Inspector General of Police Martin Okoth Ochola has confirmed that a total of 330 innocent Ugandans were shot dead in the year ending 2023,Spyreports has exclusively established.
IGP revealed this shocking information which has put Ugandans in total fear and panic on Wednesday while launching the police annual crime report at police headquarters in Naguru in Kampala. "It is very unfortunate that over 300 cases of murder by shooting were registered in Uganda in 2023 compared to 279 in 2022," Says the Police chief adding that murder by shooting increased by 7.5% which is regrettable.
However the report does not show the type of guns that were used in these murders and from which security agencies they belonged. It does not also show if there was any gun that was recovered after shooting. The released report indicates that 73 cases of murder by shooting were completely not investigated which has put some loopholes in the CID Directorate
. "Why 73 cases of murder by shooting were not proceeded yet the institution has all the facilities to follow up all these cases. It shows some slowness in the investigating arm of Police," Says a senior police chief. In the report released by IGP, a total of 298 male adults were shot dead, 25 female adults, 6 male Juveniles and 1 female Juveniles were also gunned down by the assailants. "57 cases of murder by shooting were taken to court while 170 cases are still under inquiry," reads part of the police report adding that 81 cases were still pending in courts of law awaiting trial.
In Kampala Metropolitan area, Katwe and Mukono registered highest number of murder by shooting. The report further indicates that Ntungamo District which hosts First Lady and other top government officials led murder by domestic violence. " Ntungamo is seen as one of the most developed and understanding districts in Uganda but we are shocked to see that domestic violence is high. What could be the problem, " Asked one of the Government officials.
It is indicated in the report that 242 cases of murder as a result of murder by domestic violence were reported where Ntungamo picked 15 cases. "A total of 249 people were killed in domestic violence," adding that 95 male adults were killed by women. It also shows men killed 113 of their spouses while 41 Juveniles were also murder as a result of domestic violence.
Only 8 cases of murder by domestic violence got conviction in courts of law out of 122 that were taken to courts. The report also shows the increase of murder by strangling where 414 cases were registered in 2023 compared to 379 in 2022 with an increase of 9.2%. "425 persons were murdered by strangling 261 were male adults, 96 female while 68 were Juveniles," Says the report.
The report also indicates that over 1039 people were murdered out of mob action and only 953 mob cases were reported to police. "Victims of mob action were mainly suspects of murder, theft, Robbery,witchcraft among others," Says the report. It is also on record that a total of 1129 were murdered as a result of assault where Rwizi region that comprises of Ntungamo, Mbarara,Isingiro, Kiruhura and Ibanda Districts was leading.
