Fighting  Illegal Fishing Methods Hit A Snug-Some Law Enforcers Connive With Fishers And Sell Illegal Nets''


The Ministry will work together with the Government of South Sudan to harmonise this trade so that it does not destroy the fish stocks in the region. 

 State minister for fisheries Hon.Hellen Adoa has expessed concern about the increase in immature fish entering the country through Elegu border

the ministry also noted increased use of illegal fishing gear and methods among the fishing community. 
Gears such as monofilament nets,


 undersized gillnets and illegal methods such are “hurry up”, cast netting use of beach and boat seines are too rampant and has mostly affected the nilepach juveniles like about 3/4 of the catch is nilepach.

There are 3 main types of small pelagic fish species that are harvested in the country; namely Mukene, Ragoogi and Muziri.
 Mukene is mainly found in Lake Victoria and Kyoga whereas Ragoogi and Muziri are on Lake Albert.

Hon. Adoa retareted that the small pelagic fishery like silver fish (mukene)is a very important fishery to Uganda but warnet the importers of the illegal fishing gears that their days are numbered.

She also warmed enforcement officers who empound illegal fishing gears and later sell them back to fishers.''some of the enforcers conive with fishers and sell elligal net'' the ministry expressed concern.

 ''Neighbouring districts like namayingo and pakwach claim that they are not governed by the
 fishing laws of uganda since they are not Ugandan citizens yet they have Ugandan National IDs'' The Minister revealed. 

The ministry is in the process of licencing traders, transporters and fisher
 and has plans to give alternatives to fishing communities for poor women and youths.According to Hon Minister Adoa.
