President Kagame Wins Party Primaries By 99.1% For The Next Five-Year Term.

Rwanda's ruling party, Rwandese Patriotic Front (RPF-Inkotanyi), has unanimously endorsed President Paul Kagame, who is also the party chairman, to be the party's flagbearer for the 2024 Presidential Elections, scheduled for July this year.

President Kagame garnered 1,953 votes out of a possible 1,971, equivalent to 99.1 percent, at the extraordinary congress held at the RPF-Inkotanyi Headquarters in Rusororo, Gasabo district. 15 of the votes, which were cast electronically, were invalid while 3 people abstained

In his acceptance speech, President Kagame thanked party members for entrusting him with the responsibility to continue leading the country for the next five years, yet again reminding them that as he did in 2010, while he would be happy to continue, the party should focus on a long-term strategy, which includes finding a replacement for him, when the time comes.
He also used the opportunity to remind RPF members of their duties and responsibilities in consolidating the gains over the past 30 years.
"In 2010 I accepted your decision, in 2017, I also reluctantly accepted. This time, I am accepting but we should be looking at the future, coming together to find someone suitable to replace me.That person will not come from me. It will be your job to find my replacement. Maybe as someone who provides oversight, I will come in to warn you if you make the wrong choice, but it is not my duty to identify that person."- President Kagame to RPF-Inkotanyi members, tasking them to find his replacement.

The 66 year old Kagame has ruled over the landlocked African nation with for now three decades and won the presidency in elections in 2003, 2010 and 2017 – with more than 90 percent of the vote.

Kagame's candidacy was unopposed during the Rwandan Patriotic Front congress that ended Saturday, the party said.

Kagame's only known challenger in the July polls is opposition Green Party leader Frank Habineza.

The other potential challenger to Kagame, Victoire Ingabire, leader of the unregistered Dalfa Umurunzi (Development And Liberty For All) movement, is blocked from the presidential race due to a past conviction and a court decision on whether she will be allowed to contest the presidency is set for March 13.
