Traffic Police Worried About The Increasing Number Of DMCs On The Road

Out of every 100 crashes,22 people died in 2023 where 61% of all accidents were as a result of reckless driving, and 62% of all the accidents occurred during daytime according to the annual crime report 2023.

The Director of Traffic Lawrence Nuwabiine noted that 92,029 motor vehicles were found on the road but in dangerous mechanical conditions and have increased road accidents. in various parts of the country.

the statistics also indicate that in 2023, there were a total of 20394 crashes of which 3,901 were fatal, 10,776 were serious and 5,717 were minor. The total number of casualties was 21473, fatalities,4,534 serious injuries 15,227, and 1712 minor injuries.

The most committed road crimes were driving vehicles not in good condition (92,029), driving without a valid driving permit (39,447 cases), driving without a third party 39532 cases and careless driving 78693 cases. The least cases recorded were only eight cases resulting from motor vehicles failing to stop at a railway level crossing and the age below 35 yearsare mostly lost in road accidents.

However, Traffic police director Lawrence Nuwabiine notes that several interventions including a systems approach in addressing road safety issues, Education, and Engineering are expected to have an impact on the reduction of road accidents in the country.

He has also urged road users to carefully use roads noting that road crashes are avoidable and preventable.
