DISO, LC1 chairpersons Face Jail For Recommending Foreigners For National IDs
The Uganda national Identification Registration Authority (NIRA) has said the District Internal Security officers (DISO) and LC1 Chairpersons who have continuously received bribes and recommend foreigners to get Uganda National IDs will be arrested and prosecuted in courts of law.
This strong warnings to security chiefs and local leaders was issued by NIRA PRO Osborn Mushabe while addressing the media on Monday at police headquarters in Naguru Kampala suburb.
"We have received several complaints from the public that DISO, GISO and LC1 Chairpersons have recommended foreigners in their areas to receive National ID which is criminal and against the law," he says adding any officer who will recommend foreigners for National ID will be dealt with accordingly.
He says some foreigners when they reach want to behave like Bagandas to obtain National IDs. He added that foreigners pay $100 approximately shs 370,000 to get the IDs. He further explains that NIRA has made some changes in issuing National IDs.
"When you want to make some changes on your National ID like adding another name, change years of birth,you pay shs 200,000," Explains NIRA boss adding that Ugandans are found of changing their particulars now and then.
He further says even correcting errors on your ID that were made by the holder will cost shs 200,000. "If the error was made by NIRA staff, it will be free," he stresses.
He says when an ID gets lost the holder only pays shs 50000.He urged the public that registration or renewal of the National ID is strictly free. "No NIRA staff should charge any Ugandan Citizen any money for ID registration or renewal.
He further revealed that NIRA is soon issuing express IDs at the cost of shs 300,000. He also says Birth certificates for children below 6 years is also free. Children from 7 years to 18 will pay only shs 5000 and those above 18 will pay shs 50000.
He further reveals that death certificate of people who have died in less than a year will be free and those who want death certificate after 2 years will pay shs 20000.
