Kampala Land Board Chairman Remanded on Charges of Defrauding a Korean Investor
Kampala Land Board Chairman David Balondemu has been remanded to Luzira Prison until November 6 on charges of defrauding a Korean Investor, Hyun UK Kim, of $600,000 (approximately UGX 2.2 billion). Balondemu, a prominent lawyer, was arrested by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SHACU) on orders of the President. He appeared before a judge at City Hall Court in Kampala on Friday morning, where his bail application was objected to, leading to his remand.
Balondemu is the third person to be remanded in connection with a complaint lodged by the Korean investor, who reported losing money in various gold and financial schemes. According to officials, Balondemu allegedly used his legal expertise to create a sophisticated scheme that convinced the investor to pay $600,000 in a fake gold deal.
This arrest follows an extensive investigation into the investor's claims, shedding light on the alleged deception orchestrated by Balondemu and his associates. Two other individuals, Mugisha and Maviri, were previously remanded to Luzira Maximum Security Prison on similar charges related to defrauding the same investor. The court heard that these individuals, along with others who are still at large, committed the crimes between August 2021 and November 2021 in Kampala City.
Balondemu now joins his fellow suspects in Luzira, where he will remain until his next court appearance for a bail hearing.
