MP Ssegirinya Summoned to Court over Incitement Charges.

Buganda Road Court has ordered Kawempe North Member of Parliament, Muhammad Ssegirinya, and his two sureties to appear before the court on charges of inciting violence.

Ssegirinya, who is known as "Mr. Update," is accused of making a statement on his Facebook page warning security forces not to attempt to assassinate the leader of the National Unity Platform, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu.

Ssegirinya's Facebook post reportedly contained a warning that if security forces attempted to assassinate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the aftermath of such an action would be 40 times more severe than the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, during which approximately one million people lost their lives in a period of 100 days.

Chief Magistrate Siena Owomugisha issued the criminal summons against Ssegirinya and his sureties after he failed to appear in court for the second time. The first summons was issued on February 10th, 2023, but Ssegirinya did not show up as ordered.

During the first summons on February 10th, 2023, Ssegirinya's lawyer, Medard Sssegona, informed the court that they were unable to access the court file, which was being held by another lawyer, Godfrey Turyamusiima.

Turyamusiima was absent from court due to the death of Anthony Wameli, who was the head of legal affairs for the National Unity Platform (NUP).

State Attorney Ivan Kyazze requested the court to issue criminal summons to Ssegirinya and his two sureties, Thomas Bagonza, who is the Councilor of Wandegeya, and Apollo Ariho, who is the Councilor of Kasangati Town Council.

The court ordered them to appear on April 21st, 2023, but Ssegirinya's lawyer, Medard Sssegona, did not show up.

However, Bagonza claims that he was present in the courtroom, but the magistrate conducted proceedings in the chambers. Bagonza further stated that Ssegirinya had requested him to inform the court to adjourn the case for two months to allow him to recover his health.
