Police Foil Anti - EACOP Protests In Kampala

Police in Kampala have arrested 47 students from different universities in a foiled anti-EACOP protest at Parliament.

Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said that 45 of them were arrested before reaching Parliament after security operatives intercepted four taxis that were carrying them while two managed to escape and marched to Parliament where they were also arrested.

Three drivers were also arrested while one fled leaving the taxi he was driving in motion.Said Owoyesigyire.

protestors were calling for an end to EACOP and the government of Uganda to sign a fossil free treaty.

Several road were blocked as police deployed heavily to foil the protest march.

The protestors claim that they oppose the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) and associated environmental degradation, human rights abuses and displacements. They are alleging that Total Energies fraudulently claims 70% of affected residents have been compensated.
