The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has summoned the Minister of internal affairs Gen. Jeje Odongo to explain to parliament why many officers in police have served for a long period of time without being promoted.
This comes after Gulu Municipality MP Hon. Lyandro Komakech raised a concern over Police taking ages to promote senior officials in the Police force.
“We don’t have any promotion strategy by the police, we know it should be based on merit, performance, but there are no promotions among police officers like we see in the army,” Komakech said.
The Mps further demanded that the government explains the remuneration formula for police officers saying some officers earn way too low compared to others.
“We want to know the formula they use for salary structure, it is not clear. You find an OC earning more money than the DPC”. Hon Morris Kibalya MP Kigulu South said.
The Speaker then summoned Hon Odongo to report to parliament explain there are no regular promotions in the force, like it is in the army.
She further noted that a number of Police constables had petitioned her office complaining about the lack of promotion in the force.
“I have received letters who have been serving as police constables for the last 20 years, but they are not being promoted, the minister needs to come here and update this House,” Kadaga said.
